Collection: Braided Rugs

Handmade braided rugs in natural jute and cotton, hand-braided by artisans in Rajasthan, India. Choose from round, oval, runner and rectangular braided rugs in sizes from 2x3 to 9x12 — each one coiled and stitched by hand for a durable, textured finish.

Handmade braided rugs, made to last

Every Rugritual braided rug is made by hand. Artisans in Rajasthan twist natural fibre into long braids, then coil and stitch them together row by row. The result is a dense, textured rug with a flat, even surface that holds its shape in busy rooms like entryways, kitchens and living rooms.

Braiding is one of the oldest rug-making techniques and still one of the most durable. Because each rug is made by hand, expect small, natural variations in colour and texture from one piece to the next.

Braided jute vs. braided cotton rugs

Braided jute rugs have a natural, earthy texture and a warm golden-brown tone that suits farmhouse, coastal, boho and Scandinavian rooms. Jute is a renewable plant fibre and firm underfoot, which makes it a practical choice for high-traffic areas.

Braided cotton and chindi rugs are softer to the touch. Chindi rugs are braided from strips of recycled cotton fabric, so they are colourful and lightweight — a good fit for bedrooms and nurseries.

Choosing the right braided rug size and shape

  • 2x3 and 3x5: entryways, doorways, kitchens and beside the bed.
  • 2x6 runners: hallways, galley kitchens and along the length of a bed.
  • 4x6 and 5x7: under a coffee table, in a home office or a small living room.
  • 6x9 to 9x12: living rooms and dining rooms, large enough for the front legs of your sofa — or a dining table and chairs — to sit on the rug.
  • Round and oval braided rugs: soften square rooms, fit under round dining tables and suit reading corners and nurseries.

How to care for a braided rug

Braided rugs are hand washable, not machine washable. Vacuum regularly without the beater bar, blot spills straight away and spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Jute should never be soaked, as it can stiffen and discolour. Rotate your rug every few months so it wears evenly, and use a rug pad underneath to keep it in place.

Braided rug FAQs

Are braided jute rugs soft?

Jute has a natural, slightly coarse texture — firmer than cotton or wool, but comfortable underfoot. For something softer in a bedroom or nursery, choose a braided cotton or chindi rug.

Can you wash a braided rug?

Braided rugs are hand washable, not machine washable. Spot clean jute rugs with a barely damp cloth and dry the area straight away. Cotton and chindi braided rugs can be gently washed by hand in cool water and dried flat.

Do braided jute rugs shed?

A few loose fibres are normal for natural jute, especially in the first few weeks. Regular vacuuming without the beater bar reduces shedding over time.

Are braided rugs good for high-traffic areas?

Yes. The tight, coiled construction makes braided rugs durable and hard-wearing, which is why they are a popular choice for entryways, hallways, kitchens and family rooms.

Do I need a rug pad for a braided rug?

We recommend one. A rug pad stops the rug sliding, adds cushioning and helps it last longer, especially on hard floors.

Are your braided rugs really handmade?

Yes. Each rug is hand-braided and hand-stitched by artisans in Rajasthan, India, so small variations in colour, shape and size are part of its character.

What sizes do braided rugs come in?

Rectangular braided rugs come in sizes from 2x3 up to 9x12, plus 2x6 runners. Round braided rugs come in diameters from 80 cm to 160 cm (about 2.6 to 5.2 ft).
