Rug Size Guide
Choosing the right rug size can make or break a room. At Rug Ritual, we hear the same story often: the color and pattern are perfect, but the size is off. This guide gives you room-by-room rules so you can order with confidence.
The Rug Ritual rule: When in doubt, go bigger. A rug that is too large anchors a room beautifully. A rug that is too small makes even beautiful furniture look unfinished.
Living room rug sizes
The living room rug is the foundation of your interior. Get the size right and everything else falls into place.
- Small living room (under 12 ft wide): 5×8 or 6×9 ft. Place the front two legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug.
- Medium to large living room: 8×10 or 9×12 ft. Ideally all four legs of every seating piece rest on the rug.
- Tape test: Mark the size on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for 24 hours before ordering.
Bedroom rug sizes
A bedroom rug should give you warmth and softness the moment your feet hit the floor.
- Queen bed: 8×10 ft, extending at least 18–24 inches on both sides and at the foot of the bed.
- King bed: 9×12 ft, extending past the foot of the bed and well beyond the sides.
- Budget option: Two matching 2×8 runners on either side of the bed for a designer look at lower cost.
Dining room rug sizes
One rule overrides everything: chairs must stay on the rug when pulled out.
- 6-seat table: Minimum 8×10 ft.
- 8-seat table: 9×12 ft.
- Add 24 inches to each side of your table as a starting point for sizing.
- Choose low-pile, flatweave, or easy-clean rugs for dining areas.
Hallway and entryway runners
- Hallway: Runner 2–3 inches narrower than the hall width. Common sizes: 2×8, 2.5×10, and 3×12 ft.
- Entryway: 3×5 ft, large enough to cover the full door swing area.

3 sizing mistakes to avoid
- Going too small — the most common error. Size up when you are between sizes.
- Not measuring first — measure your room and furniture footprint, not just wall-to-wall dimensions.
- Skipping a rug pad — a felt-and-rubber pad prevents slipping, buckling, and uneven wear.
