Round rugs are already sized in centimetres — 80 cm, 100 cm, 120 cm, 140 cm and 160 cm across.
If you are between two sizes, go up. The most common sizing regret in an Australian lounge room is a rug that floats in the middle of the floor because it is too small for the lounge suite. As a rule, the rug should be at least as wide as your lounge, and the front legs of every seat should land on it.
Choosing a size for an Australian home
Lounge room
Most Australian lounge rooms take a 183 × 274 cm rug comfortably. In a smaller apartment living area, 152 × 213 cm is usually enough to anchor a two-seater and a chair. Leave 20–45 cm of bare floorboard or tile showing between the rug and the skirting — a rug that runs wall to wall makes the room read smaller.
Rumpus room
A rumpus room is the one space where you can size down without it looking like a mistake, because the furniture is usually pushed to the walls. A 152 × 213 cm rug defines a seating zone in front of the television; a 183 × 274 cm rug covers enough floor for kids to sprawl on. Go for a flat weave or a tight cotton pile here rather than a deep one — this is the room that takes the most punishment.
Bedroom
For a queen bed, allow 45–60 cm of rug on each side so your feet land on wool rather than cold floor. A 183 × 274 cm rug set under the lower two-thirds of the bed does this well. For a smaller room, a pair of runners either side of the bed works better than one undersized rug.
Hallway
Australian hallway runners are typically 80 cm wide and 300 cm long. Our 61 × 183 cm runner is narrower and shorter, which suits a short entry hall, a laundry or the space in front of a kitchen bench rather than a long corridor. Measure your hall and leave an even gap of bare floor on each side.
Dining room
The rug needs to extend 60 cm past every edge of the table so chairs stay on it when pulled out. For a four-seater, 152 × 213 cm is the minimum. For a six-seater, step up to 183 × 274 cm.

Buying a rug for an Australian summer
Timing runs opposite to the northern hemisphere here, and it changes what you want underfoot. Through summer, from December to February, a flat-weave cotton or a braided jute rug reads cooler and is easier to lift and shake out after a season of bare feet, sand and open doors. Come winter, from June to August, a denser hand-tufted pile is the one that makes a tiled or floorboarded lounge room bearable in the evening.
