Getting the placement right

Living room — at minimum, the front legs of your sofa should rest on the rug. The rug should be at least as wide as the sofa.
Bedroom — allow 18–24 in (45–60 cm) of rug on each side of the bed so your feet land on wool, not floor.
Dining room — the rug needs to extend 24 in (60 cm) past every edge of the table so chairs stay on it when pulled out.
Any room — leave 8–18 in (20–45 cm) of bare floor between the rug and the walls. A rug that runs wall to wall makes a room feel smaller.

Before you order: mark the size out on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. It is the quickest way to be certain, and it costs nothing.
